Introduction to building a garage
Garages are constructed by laying the foundation followed by a 100mm external wall. Pillars are built internally to strengthen the whole structure. Windows and courtesy doors out onto rear gardens, side or to the inside of the house can be added.
Building regulations specify all garages require concrete bases and that planning permission is required if the garage is a permanent structure.
Different grades of concrete are available to suit different jobs. RC35 concrete with its added strength would easily support if laid to 100-150mm depth any standard family vehicle. Re-enforced steel is added to concrete floors when the dimensions cover a much greater area. An alternative to this would be fibrecrete concrete which does the same job.
Roof styles and materials can vary according to budget. A flat roof typically lasts for 15 years maximum, so a pitch roof would be strongly advised as a better alternative.
